Refreshing a Winter Wreath

Does anyone else have a wreath that has just lost its touch? I have one that I think is super versatile and cute for winter but, in the past season, cute little birds decided that the berries looked tasty and started pecking at them. Thus, my wreaths now lost its luster. The berries are just styrofoam pieces now and the red color is gone. I hate that the birds thought these were real berries (I don’t know how to prevent them eating these!) but hope that no birds were harmed as they sought what they thought was a tasty treat.

Instead of purchasing an entirely new wreath, I decided to use some of the stems that were included in my garland to refresh my wreath. I purchased the garland from Balsam Fir but it has dried out and needed to be taken down. I noticed that the berries were real and thought it would be a perfect way to re-purpose elements of the garland. If you don’t have stems to reuse, it is easy to go to Michaels or a craft store nearby and grab a few stems to do this trick.

How to refresh a winter wreath:

  1. Remove wreath from door and use wire cutters to clip the old items that you want to remove. Try to get as close to the wreath as possible without cutting other pieces. I have these to cut wire stems and, although they are very intense, they work so well.
  2. Tuck in new stems into wreath. There are typically wires looping around the wreath so I delicately stuck my stems in the existing wire. If you’re having trouble with this, you can either use hot glue at the base of the stem or use zip ties/wire/twist ties/etc. to attach the new stems. I think using the existing wire is best because it doesn’t require much to make the new stems look really seamless.
  3. Voila! You’re done! This is seriously one of the easiest ways to make a wreath look new again and requires very little time.

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments. I have done this with all types of wreaths (and made my own wreaths) so can definitely do my best to help you if you’re running into hurdles. Let me know how it goes!

xoxo, LL
