It is SO easy to get bogged down with the idea of cooking (especially after a long day when everything seems to be going wrong). Here are my tips for having more fun in the kitchen:
- Plan ahead. I feel like one of the worst parts of cooking is going to the grocery store but now we have so many ways we can get groceries (Amazon Fresh, Shipp’d, Instacart, Pickup orders, etc.). Planning takes time and can be frustrating so start small – pick one thing to try and get the ingredients ahead of time. This will take away some of the ‘overwhelming’ feeling.
- Start simple. If you don’t have fun cooking then you’re REALLY not going to enjoy making a 3-course meal. Know your limits and don’t push yourself when you know it will get frustrating. There is ZERO shame in pre-made things. Go make an awesome delish main dish that you can have fun with (but pick up a salad kit and buy popsicles so you don’t have to worry about anything else).
- Plug in a speaker and jam out. Seriously – music can do wonders. I don’t care if you like classic rock, instrumental, metal, or pop. Whatever you like, put it on in the background and don’t be afraid to use your spatula as a pretend mic
- Do it on your own time. When we are feeling rushed by other people or responsibilities, it is easy to give up and get frustrated. I’ve also found that most cookbooks and even food prep services (blue apron, hello fresh) have ‘times’ associated to their recipes but I personally find that this can set an expectation that it should be done within that time. I have a lot of opinions on this but long story short, everyone cooks differently and has different tools/appliances. When you’re cooking, do it on your time without expectations of when it should be done.
I hope this helps! xo, LL
